Sarah hadn’t intended to go on a quest. All she had wanted was to buy some spices in the market. Yet, here she was, alone in the rain without a friend in the world. Not to mention the Queen planning to boil her in oil, and all the soldiers in two countries out for her hide. Why did that old woman, Udine, hate her so? And, the three bungling thieves? Why did they keep turning up? Well, maybe she did have one friend, Windhagle would never abandon her. Of course, there was also Hotep, even if he was a useless old wizard or something. Maybe it would be better in the boiling oil. At least she would be warm.
The book contains no profanity or sex. Humor, anger, exasperation, pathos and terror are interspersed to move the story toward its dramatic conclusion.
The Emerald Spire edition by J A Lyons Literature Fiction eBooks
Across a vast landscape of fantasy novels with young heroines, J.A. Lyons has thrust forth a new take on the classic tale of the Hero's -- or Heroine's -- Journey. Fantasy fans of all ages (and genders) will find much that is familiar and much to love in The Emerald Spire. They'll recognize many of the character archetypes, if not some of the names. Our protagonist, Sarah, begins the tale as one might expect but later is full of unexpected turns. Indeed, she is a refreshing throwback to the protagonist of older fantasy works from masters like Tolkien and Goodkind. Sarah bucks the "Mary Sue" trend of so many heroines of late - able to handle any situation with aplomb and never needing help from the men or other women in their lives - and finds herself in over her head throughout many parts of the novel. One of the best conflicts in the story is the one between Sarah and herself. In keeping with his overall theme, Lyons writes his scenes with lush description. Beautiful colors and sweeping vistas are all inserted into the reader's mind. But the book does not become bogged down in adjectives and descriptors like some other tales. Sarah faces dangers both internal and external at a rapid pace to keep the reader engaged.
Fans of William Goldman's The Princess Bride, Terry Goodkind novels and Brian Rathbone's World of Godsland will find many things to love about this book!

The Emerald Spire edition by J A Lyons Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This is a wonderful exciting adventure!
I could not put it down!
Read and enjoy!
You will not be disappointed!
The Emerald Spire has just enough fantasy to be interesting, yet not so much as to become silly. The main character is especially well drawn and one immediately develops an affinity for her. She is spunky without being over-heroic. She does things because they need doing, not because she's Super Woman. She begins with a lot of self-doubts since she is a girl alone in a home filled with active men, yet you can watch her strength and abilities grow in a realistic way. Sarah is a girl becoming a woman and she has a lot of developing feelings and emotions. Her first tiptoe towards love is especially interesting, especially when that love seems to become hate.
All the supporting characters are believable as well, and there are a wide range of good, bad, humorous, and villainous people and animals to keep the reader occupied. A couple of great characters, such as the cross-dressing hooker in Chapter One, almost jump off the page in only a few words. The three bungling thieves are wonderful and the brutish little weasels are especially frightening and yuckie.
Unlike a lot of what passes for today's literature, The Emerald Spire contains no wanton sex, murder and mayhem. In fact, there is no profanity or sex, and Sarah, the main character, is a girl you'd be pleased to have as a daughter or friend. You get to watch Sarah grow as a woman and person chapter by chapter.
There are a few places where the pace slows, but this gives the reader a chance to catch their breath.
Boys might be hesitant to read the book because the hero is a girl, but they would probably love it once they got past the first few chapters and into the adventure itself. Girls who like fantasy with a little romance should love it. I'm way past girlhood, but I loved it anyway.
